Persia gave rise to many of history’s greatest minds-mathematicians, astronomers, philosophers, poets, and mystics. During the height of the Persian Golden Age, Sufism flourished as a profound spiritual tradition that deeply influenced many of these remarkable figures. Between the 10th and 13th centuries, Persia became home to some of the world’s most influential spiritual teachers and mystics, whose wisdom continues to inspire readers centuries later.
The following quotations are drawn from the writings and teachings of several of these great Persian sages.
- “Whoever has a piece of bread and a humble home in which to rest; whoever is neither a master nor a slave to another-such a person should be happy, for they possess everything in the world.”
– Omar Khayyam
- “O my friend, do not surrender to the sorrow of the world. Borrow nothing from this realm of empty grief and sadness. The past is behind you, and the future has not yet arrived. Be joyful, and do not fear tomorrow’s pain.”
– Omar Khayyam
- “The heart is a house. It is the dwelling place of angels, where they descend and abide. Every evil tendency-anger, desire, contempt, envy, pride, vanity, and the like-is like a barking dog. How can angels enter a house filled with such dogs?”
– Al-Ghazali
- “If the heart does not seek its true dignity and greatness, but longs only for material and sensual pleasures, no creature is weaker, more helpless, or more miserable than the human being. One moment they become the victim of disappointment and sorrow; the next they suffer from illness and hardship. At one time they are tormented by hunger and thirst, at another they become slaves to their own ambition and greed. Such a person cannot know even a single day of lasting happiness or peace, for they are condemned to live with an outstretched hand, constantly begging for the pleasures of the world-which, more often than not, are denied to them.”
– Al-Ghazali
- “And if you ask me, my friend, what the Path is, I will tell you plainly: look life directly in the eyes and turn your back on titles and fame. Leave those who live by words, and take your place among the silent.”
– Hakim Sanai
- “Free yourself from yourself. Until you see yourself as nothing more than a speck of dust, you cannot reach that place. Pride can never breathe that air. Therefore, walk the Path without yourself.”
– Hakim Sanai
- “Be humble toward all people like the dust beneath your feet… and free from everything like the wind.”
– Nizami
- “Why do you rush about endlessly for a piece of bread? Wise people hurry only to find an inn where they may rest. Happiness dwells within the boundaries of peace, and everything beyond them is vanity.”
– Nizami
- “Whoever is content needs nothing. Whoever seeks solitude away from the noise of the crowd will find peace. Whoever has conquered the desires of the flesh will discover freedom. Whoever has freed themselves from envy will find friendship. And whoever possesses a little patience will discover that they are ready for eternity.”
– Attar
- “Free yourself from the chains of desire and passion. God did not create you to be their prisoner. They are meant to be your servants along the path you must travel. Let them be your tools and your weapons as you pursue your true happiness. And when you no longer need them, cast them into the dust beneath your feet.”
– Attar
